Article: Socialists foil bid to resolve Italy's crisis

ROME Italian Socialists yesterday rejected veteran Christian Democrat Giulio Andreotti, 67, as the man to build a new government, just a day after President Francesco Cossiga had appointed him to resolve the two-week government crisis.

The rejection, amid increasing hostility between the two main center-left coalition parties, the Christian Democrats and Socialists, preempts Andreotti's consultations, which were to begin on Monday.

Announcing the decision after a meeting of the Socialist Party executive, assistant general secretary Claudi Martelli said: "Our rejection is not a rejection of Mr. Andreotti personally, but of the manner in which he was offered the job." Hostile conditions
