FISH CREEK, Wis. The kerosene exploded with a roar, sending flames
and dense clouds of black smoke a dozen feet into the air. The
Master Boiler laughed and danced away.
A rotund man who loves to eat and play the accordion, the Master
Boiler had just ignited a flame in the hearts of the hungry, who were
waiting impatiently to enter the White Gull Inn and enjoy a
Scandinavian fish boil.
This flaming spectacle is repeated countless times during the
summer in Door County. Anyone who has gasped at the dark flames
knows they are the dramatic prelude to a delicious dinner of potatoes
and whitefish dripping with melted butter.
