Article: Marxist Chinh chosen for top Vietnam post

HANOI President Truong Chinh, a party founder, a key figure in five wars and the man regarded as Vietnam's strictest Marxist ideologue, won unanimous election yesterday as general secretary of the Communist Party, the nation's most powerful position.

The election, at a special session of the party central committee, combined the presidency and party leadership for the first time since Ho Chi Minh died in 1969. It appeared to indicate a desire for continuity among Vietnamese officials.

Prime Minister Pham Van Dong, 80, remains as head of the government, but the party-leader position traditionally has been the top one.
