The deaths of Maryland basketball star Len Bias and Cleveland
Browns football standout Don Rogers have captured the nation's
attention because of cocaine involvement.
Unfortunately, it takes the passing of a prominent athlete to
reawaken the public to a menacing problem on college campuses - drug
abuse.
As those of us involved in college athletics can attest,
education is
the key to solving drug abuse problems. The more aware
student-athletes are made to dangers of drugs and the earlier they
are introduced to prevention programs, the better the results.
Substance abuse prevention programs should begin in elementary
school and continue throughout formal education.
