Gary Hallberg has decided to come home and settle down. That
decision already has paid dividends.
Yesterday the former Barrington golfer enjoyed his first
breakthrough in the 83rd Western Open, shooting a 4-under-par 68 to
gain a share of the first-round lead.
Bob Gilder and Loren Roberts also shot 68s. They're a shot ahead
of Calvin Peete, Hale Irwin, Tim Simpson, Bobby Wadkins, Scott
Simpson, Tom Purtzer and Dick Mast as the $500,000 championship heads
into its second round today at Butler National Golf Club.
Hallberg's round was the most significant development yesterday.
Just eight months ago Hallberg was diagnosed as having
mononucleosis. His weight dropped from 160 to 132 pounds.
