A gay community newspaper accused former mayor Jane M. Byrne
this week of being a fair-weather friend to gays by her failure to
vigorously support a gay rights ordinance.
The legislation was proposed to protect homosexuals from hiring
and housing discrimination but was defeated in the City Council on
July 29 by a 30-18 vote.
Although Byrne has shown support for the gay community in the
past, "when this community needed her political clout more than ever,
former mayor Byrne avoided us like a political plague," wrote Tracy
Baim in the Windy City Times.
