Article: Montreal serves up flavor of Paris - without jet lag

MONTREAL A native-born Canadian recently told me his theory about U.S. travelers. They all have the same response to their first glimpse of his country's nearly pristine cities:

"For a few days, they're delighted; they keep saying, `It's so clean.' Then they ask `Why?' and begin to look for the dark underbelly of the Canadian psyche."

I was in Montreal for five days this summer, courtesy of Air Canada and the Quebec provincial tourist bureau, so I never got past the "It's so clean" phase. But with so many other stock phrases - "it's so lively, the women are so chic, the Metro's so quiet" - rattling around in my head, I was no mood to look for darker motives.
