Article: `Mr. Democracy' symbolizes bitter Caribbean truths

Writing from the Dominican Republic When I first met Juan Bosch in 1965 during the Dominican revolution, he was "Mr. Democracy in the Caribbean." Then, when he was not re-elected president, Bosch bitterly proclaimed him self for "dictatorship with popular support."

By 1976, when I saw him again, he seemed uniquely at peace. He had gathered around himself a small, intensely dedicated salon coterie, and this man who had hated communism had decided he was a Marxist after all.

And today? Today I find Bosch, a crucial figure in Caribbean history, looking not much different than he did during those turbulent days of revolution in 1965.
