I had a free evening in Moscow a few weeks ago so I decided to call
up an old friend - Nick Daniloff, U.S. News and World Report's
correspondent in the Soviet capital.
I made the call in the middle of the afternoon. Nick didn't
stand on ceremony. "How about joining us tonight for dinner?" he
asked. "Six o'clock - no, wait, I'd better ask Ruth first. Can you
call back in an hour or so?'
When I did, the time was set at 7 o'clock.
I stopped off at the hard-currency shop in my hotel, picked up a
bottle of imported French spirits, boarded a taxi and followed Nick's
instructions.
By the time I got there - a bit late - Nick and Ruth already had
begun their dinner. They commanded me to join ...
