WASHINGTON (AP) The Soviet Union is not ready to be a useful
member of the world's major trade organization, but China's move
toward a market economy makes it a desirable candidate, the U.S.
trade representative said yesterday.
"I have some of the same reservations and concerns with respect
to China coming in as I would have with respect to the Soviet Union
coming in," Clayton K. Yeutter told European reporters in a satellite
news conference. But, he said, "China has moved much more toward a
market-oriented kind of economy than has the Soviet Union. . . . I
don't see much indication at the moment that the Soviet Union is
moving its economy in that direction."
