Bears coach Mike Ditka answered the critics yesterday by holding
his hands about an inch apart.
"We're about that far away from being really good," he said.
Ditka is aware of a growing public dissatisfaction with the
defending world champion Bears despite their 2-0 record. He knows
many people are still grumbling about the Bears' shaky 41-31 victory
in the opener over Cleveland and Sunday's nar
row 13-10 overtime escape against the Philadelphia Eagles.
And he realizes the memory fresh in the minds of many fans is
the dominance the Bears enjoyed when they outscored opponents 91-10
in three playoff games last year.
"We're not there right now because we're hurting ourselves,"
