What was that sound downtown yesterday morning?
That, businessladies and gentlemen, was an alphorn. And the guy
at the business end of the 12-foot instrument was Clayton Streiff, of
New Glarus, Wis.
Streiff and wife, Marion - in full Swiss regalia, befitting
their hometown, the "Little Switzerland of the Midwest" - were in
town to entertain at the groundbreaking for the new Swiss Grand Hotel
at the Illinois Center.
Streiff, who belongs to five Swiss musical groups, has been a
master of the alphorn for 25 years. He and his compatriots are
famous (in New Glarus, at least) for having written the song, ...
