Article: Iranian shells hit Iraq; war goes into 7th year

Iran claimed yesterday that it shelled Iraqi supply routes and troop concentrations and repelled attacks by Iraqi jets as the war between the two countries entered its seventh year.

Iraq did not issue any battle statements and the Iranian claims could not be verified. Both countries marked the anniversary of the war with events in their capitals.

Iran's Islamic Republic News Agency said "a considerable number" of Iraqi soldiers were killed or wounded in artillery duels in the southern and central sectors of the war front.

It said Iraqi supply routes and troop concentrations running north from Baghdad in the central sector were shelled from Iranian-occupied hills inside Iraq.
