Article: Leasing vacant land would end city's crisis

In response to your Sept. 21 editorial:

At my Sept. 17 news conference, I offered an alternative to what Mayor Washington declared was a fiscal crisis in Chicago.

This is not the first time in his three and a half years that the present mayor has threatened the public with the big stick of fiscal crisis and governmental emergency. The remedies he offered were 40 percent reductions in police and fire service, closing of health clinics and greatly reduced garbage collections. That would indeed be an emergency, and would be very hard on the people of Chicago.

I believe, and I have said this since 1982, that raising taxes on homes and businesses is not the way to go for Chicago. ...
