NEW DELHI Sikh extremists disguised as police officers opened
fire yesterday on the police chief of the northern Indian state of
Punjab, and authorities admitted that the man who tried to
assassinate Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi a day earlier also is a Sikh.
Police Chief J. F. Ribeiro said one officer was killed and six
people, including himself and his wife, were injured when the six
disguised extremists attacked police headquarters in the city of
Jullunder, 75 miles northwest of the Punjab capital of Chandigarh.
Officials said the assailants, who drove up in a jeep, first
wounded two policemen and then shot 30 to 40 rounds of submachine gun
and revolver fire at Ribeiro and his wife, ...
