HOUSTON The longest playoff game ever was the best. No
argument.
The New York Mets won the National League championship yesterday
by scrubbing potato-sized Houston Astros reliever Aurelio Lopez for
three runs in the 16th inning after ex-Cub Billy Hatcher had tied it
in the 14th with a home run, then holding on for a 7-6 decision.
The Astros had the tying run at second base and the winner at
first when Kevin Bass struck out.
By winning the best-of-seven series in six
games, the Mets won the third pennant in their 25-year history and
their first in 13 years. They'll host the first two games of the
World Series beginning Saturday night.
