Article: Pecan Pie // A nutcracker sweet

A pecan pie just like the one Mom used to make has won first place in the Sun-Times Pecan Pie Contest.

Theresa Slack of Gurnee wrote that her recipe for the buttery-textured, traditional pie was indeed handed down from her mother.

"I made it as a birthday pie for my son when he was very small. Now that he is in his 30s, he still gets pecan pie for special occasions, and perhaps his son will get it for a special treat," wrote Slack, who said she always has liked baking but has never entered a recipe contest.

"If you make it on Wednesday," she joked, "it is calorie free."
