WASHINGTON Final approval of a controversial statement on the nation's economy and the election of new leaders likely will be overshadowed by "the Hunthausen affair" when U.S. Roman Catholic bishops meet here this week.

For months the thrice-revised pastoral letter on the economy and the selection of officers had seemed to dominate the National Conference of Catholic Bishops' agenda.
