Article: Sting's Granitza marking meaningful Thanksgiving

Unlike the rest of us, professional athletes die twice. The first time comes usually in their 30s, when their bosses tell them they are washed up, over the hill, not worth what they are being paid. It is a mortal wounding of the pride.

Karl-Heinz Granitza has just gone through that. He can smile about it now, say he is relaxed and looking forward to tomorrow night's Sting home opener against Wichita in a new home, the Rosemont Horizon. But he lives with the fresh memory of "a very, very tough time" in the months since his soccer team's last season.

In a smaller way, Granitza has been the Stan Mikita or even the Ernie Banks of a sport less appreciated than theirs in Chicago.
