When it was over, and the Bears had underwhelmed the Steelers
13-10 in overtime, Mike Ditka gave Mike Tomczak a game ball.
"A deflated one," Tomczak reported.
It amounted to a grade of B-minus, which was quite a comeback
for the Bears' stand-in quarterback. Earlier yesterday afternoon,
teacher Ditka had flown into such a fit over pupil Tomczak's
shortcomings it seemed young Mike would wind up sitting in a corner
of Soldier Field under a dunce cap.
The oral spanking, which Ditka administered before 61,425
witnesses on the lakefront and most of the country watching on TV,
was prompted by the Tomczak kid's flunking tests in two elementary
skills, telling time and reading.
