The stage is now set for the greatest Capitol Hill extravaganza since Watergate: a double-barreled inquiry into the Iran-contra scandal that has rocked the Reagan presidency and shocked the nation and the world.

Two committees, one in the Senate and one in the House, will begin separate hearings early next year - mostly open and televised - with a cast of prominent political performers, conceivably including even President Reagan himself.

Armed with subpoena power to compel attendance and oath-taking power to punish false witness, the two panels are in the best possible position to dig fact out of the muddle of confusion and supposition that exists today.
