PHOENIX They're getting ready to build a subdivision at the Frank
Lloyd Wright Foundation's Taliesin West, in the once wide-open spaces
on the northeast fringe of metropolitan Phoenix.
Whatever oaths Wright's ghost may be muttering over such a
profanation, the Taliesin Gates development does make an apt image
for one aspect of Arizona that confronts a first-time visitor to the
youngest state in the Lower 48.
I'm speaking of the astounding urban sprawl that has overtaken
Phoenix (now the nation's ninth most populous city) and, to a lesser
extent, Tucson. The single-family home is king here, marching to the
horizon in rows of earth-toned monotony. And a native Arizonan in
