Q. My daughter has an 8-month-old child who has had a sleeping problem for a few weeks. Her pediatrician says that it might be caused by an allergy to milk. I would like to know if there could be such a connection.

A. I would assume that your grandchild's pediatrician, who knows the child as well as anyone, had good reason for linking a milk allergy to the sleeping problem. An association between sleeplessness in infants and an allergy to cow's milk has been documented in at least one study that has come to my attention.
