Article: Economic reform seen in selection of Viet boss

BANGKOK, Thailand The sixth Vietnamese Communist Party congress ended yesterday with economic reformer Nguyen Van Linh chosen as new party chief.

Linh was chosen unanimously, Radio Hanoi said. His elevation highlights a series of dramatic turns that seem to add another communist nation to those shifting from communist orthodoxy to more flexible economic practices.

Linh's election followed the resignation Wednesday of several Vietnamese leaders, including Truong Chinh, 79, former party chief; Pham Van Dong, 80, former prime minister, and senior Politburo member Le Duc Tho, 75.
