When Dr. Etienne-Emile Baulieu says "ovary," his French accent makes it sound somehow more exotic than a mere reproductive organ. "Ovaree," he says.

As it happens, Baulieu has had occasion to say "ovaree" many times recently while here talking about the new birth control pill he conceived and developed with the help of a French-based drug company. The drug is called RU 486, which at this point is more code word than marketable product. Rep. Robert K. Dornan (R-Calif.) calls it a "death pill," which gives some indication of the controversy the mere prospect of this pill inspires.
