MAUNA KEA, Hawaii Miles above the tropical beaches, overlooking the dazzling blue of the Pacific, is a place where dedicated thrill-seekers can fly down a snow-packed ski run on the slopes of a volcano.

Between January and May, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa - the Big Island's two towering volcanos - have been known to receive as much as 60 inches in a single snowfall. Ancient Hawaiian chiefs, and even their gods, are said to have raced their koa and ironwood sleds down these mountains.
