Article: John Bartlow Martin, 71, nonfiction novelist, dies

John Bartlow Martin, pioneer of the nonfiction novel who wrote the comprehensive biography of Adlai E. Stevenson and was ambassador and special presidential envoy to the Dominican Republic, died yesterday at 71 in his native Highland Park.

A free-lance writer, Mr. Martin crafted speeches for presidents and public figures. He was a staff writer for the Saturday Evening Post, a biographer and a diplomat.

He spent his life observing, then writing about events and personalities surrounding him. He produced 16 books.

The prodigious writer had to cut his two-volume biography of the late presidential contender Stevenson from his original 10,000 to 2,000 manuscript pages.
