LOS ANGELES Actor-dancer Ray Bolger, who as the rubber-legged
Scarecrow helped Dorothy get back home in the movie "The Wizard of
Oz," died yesterday of cancer. He was 83.
Mr. Bolger, the last survivor of the cheerful foursome that
trouped down the yellow brick road to visit the wizard, died in a Los
Angeles nursing home, family spokesman Barry Greenberg said.
"His death was a long time coming," said his wife, Gwendolyn
Rickard, whom he married in 1929. "He had been ill on and off for
more than two years. But thank God he didn't suffer."
The couple had no children.
The lean, loose-limbed Mr. Bolger began in vaudeville, graduated
to the Broadway stage and then went to Hollywood, ...
