PEKING Hu Yaobang resigned yesterday as Chinese Communist Party
chief in what was seen as a setback to top leader Deng Xiaoping and
his efforts to assure the durability of his ambitious reforms.
Analysts said the resignation had created China's most serious
political crisis in a decade, plunging the country into a period of
uncertainty.
Hu, 71, resigned after a session of "self-criticism of his
mistakes on major issues of political principles in violation of the
party's principle of collective leadership," a party Central
Committee communique said.
The move, 10 months before a party congress that was to have
seen the 82-year-old Deng retire, leaves the race for his succession
