PBS presents the season premiere of "Frontline," reported by
James Reston Jr. Executive producer: David Fanning. Airing from 9 to
10 tonight on WTTW-Channel 11.
For a long time, many Americans thought of it as a big,
lumbering truck in space. Soon, anyone could be a passenger:
butcher, baker, candlestick maker. Or a teacher. After a while, its
trips became "routine." After so many launches, the names of its crew
were hard to remember - until a year ago tomorrow.
When the space shuttle Challenger exploded moments after its
launch - killing its seven-member crew, including teacher Christa
McAuliffe - our cocky national self-image as the technological
