Article: Lake catfish, salmon rated hazardous to your health

SPRINGFIELD Toughened federal standards mean that catfish caught in Lake Michigan are rated as potentially deadly to those who regularly dine on them.

An advisory released this week by the health departments of Illinois and three other states showed lake populations of catfish are more than 50 percent contaminated by such chemicals as PCB, DDT or mercury.

Included for the first time in the most-dangerous category are Chinook salmon more than 32 inches long.

Catfish are more common in the northern waters of Lake Michigan, but they are "very, very infrequently" caught in the Illinois waters, said Michael Conlin, head of the division of fisheries of the state Conservation Department.
