Astaff report to Attorney General Edwin Meese argues that
overturning the Supreme Court's 1966 decision in Miranda vs. Arizona
would "be among the most important achievements of this
administration - indeed of any administration - in restoring the
power of self-government to the people of the United States in the
repression of crime."
The Miranda decision, which the report characterizes as the
"epitome of Warren Court activism," is well known to most American
movie and television viewers. As anyone who watches "Hill Street
Blues" or "Cagney & Lacey" knows, it requires the police to give
