SEOUL Tensions mounted in South Korea yesterday as the
government formally banned a national memorial service for a police
torture victim that opposition and dissident forces resolved to hold
tomorrow.
Justice Minister Kim Sung Ky issued a statement declaring the
planned gathering at Seoul's Myongdong Roman Catholic Cathedral
illegal.
He said President Chun Doo Hwan's government would move to
"counteract any sinister moves to use Park Chong Chul's death for
political demagoguery."
The government admitted that the 21-year-old Seoul National
University student died Jan. 14 during interrogation by members of an
anti-communist police unit. The death was the first time the
