Article: We can still halt `star wars' folly

Christalyn Beau, in a recent letter (Feb. 5), urges that we begin "star wars" as soon as possible because "there is evidence" of a Soviet system "that can make our offensive weapons ineffective."

Beau should know that we've already begun work on "star wars" and have spent more than $8 billion on the system in the last three years. As the pork from this spending spreads, it will be more and more difficult to make decisions on the system based on sound strategy rather than defense contract politics.

Whatever Beau's "evidence" of soviet superiority, it isn't available to the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff. In a February, 1986, "Posture Statement," the Joint Chiefs found the United ...
