Ending a four-day pause in air attacks, Iraq yesterday launched
multiple raids on Iranian cities to mar the celebration of the 1979
Islamic revolution that brought Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to power
in Tehran.
In retaliation, Iran fired the 10th surface-to-surface missile
since the start of the year at Baghdad, the Iraqi capital. The
state-owned Iraqi News Agency said scores of civilians were killed or
wounded and many houses were destroyed.
Iran also reported that commando units of its elite
Revolutionary Guards attacked Iraqi forces in the northern Kurdish
areas and killed or wounded many soldiers. But a military spokesman
in Baghdad denied that the attack took place.
