JERUSALEM John Demjanjuk, accused of being "Ivan the Terrible"
who operated the gas chambers at Treblinka death camp in
Nazi-occupied Poland during World War II, went on trial here
yesterday for mass murder, genocide and crimes against the Jewish
people.
If the 66-year-old former Cleveland machinist is found guilty
under the Israeli law covering punishment of Nazis and their
collaborators, he could go to the gallows.
Normally, however, capital punishment is not practiced in
Israel.
Hard-fought extradition
Demjanjuk was extradited to Israel a year ago after U.S.
Immigration and Naturalization Service officials proved in a series
of hard-fought court cases that he committed perjury by ...
