NEW YORK Julie Kavner is hooked on comedy. As a child, she
would get a laugh even when she didn't mean to be funny. As an
adult, she decided that the sound of an audience laughing was
gratifying enough to make it a lifelong pursuit.
"Through comedy," Kavner said, "you get people to laugh at
themselves and lighten up, which is very important. Without that, we
can all lose our sanity. It eases the tensions between different
factions and religions. It makes life easier. The best comedy . .
. always includes a certain pathos, humanity, warmth."
Kavner is one of the principals in Woody Allen's new comedy,
"Radio Days," now at Chicago's Chestnut Station and three suburban
