In Bob Hallberg's nightmares, a scratchy female voice will
holler: "B 14!"
Another will shout: "Bingo!"
And he will wake up in a sweat, reliving the awful odyssey of
1986-87, the Chicago State basketball schedule.
The bus had broken down on the trip out of Chicago. A
substitute bus, unheated, had taken the Cougars the rest of the way
to Wisconsin-Green Bay. The bus that was to take them home broke
down, so 15 young players had to share a charter with 20 senior
citizens of a ladies bingo club.
It was just a slice of life from a schedule that seems to have
been drawn up by the Marquis de Sade.
