A Chicago Board of Education committee yesterday endorsed an
enrollment plan for a new South Loop school that calls for a mix of
students from two public housing projects and the largely
middle-class Dearborn Park community.
The plan was criticized by representatives of parent groups.
Dearborn Park parents questioned whether the plan would lead to
overcrowding within a few years, while public housing parents
dismissed the enrollment formula as "a sinister tactic of
appeasement."
The plan, approved by the board's desegregation committee,
designates the new school under construction in Dearborn Park as a
neighborhood school, but also opens it to some children living in the
nearby ...
