DUBLIN, Ireland Lurking U.S., British and Soviet submarines -
some with nuclear weapons - have turned the Irish Sea into a danger
zone for local fishermen, who have lost equipment and even their
lives in tangles with hidden vessels.
Last Wednesday, a 57-foot fishing boat from County Down,
Northern Ireland, was towed backward for 20 miles in a nightmare
journey that began when its fishing gear was snagged by a passing
submarine. Eric Cully, skipper of the Summer Morn, was finally
forced to cut his nets to free the boat.
According to the Northern Ireland Fish Producers Association,
Cully will seek "substantial" damages from the U.S. Navy, which has
accepted responsibility for the ...
