Article: Rocket maker to cut fees in NASA accord

Morton Thiokol, the Chicago-based company that builds the booster rockets blamed for the explosion of the Challenger space shuttle, has agreed to reduce fees paid by NASA and forgo profits on work required to fix future rockets, NASA said yesterday.

Under the deal, Morton Thiokol will voluntarily reduce its fees from the shuttle contract by $10 million and will perform $409 million worth of repair and redesign work on the boosters without profit, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration said in a statement.

NASA indicated it would not seek further penalties as a result of the company's voluntary reductions.
