Fine-arts video, in case you've passed over that little corner of
your neighborhood video store, is the culture lover's port in a
storm. It's the spot where VCR owners who've been riveted by Rambo,
carved by Conan, diced by Dirty Harry and numbed by Chuck Norris can
find a brief encounter with harmony and beauty.
A few years ago, it took Sherlock Holmes to find something
cultural on video racks. Hidden among movie releases were a few
ballet tapes - and usually those featured "The Nutcracker." Headier
stuff for adults seemed to elude the video market, much as it had on
cable television.
But as smaller companies get a foothold in the treacherous video
