OK, so this isn't pretty food. In fact, it's really ugly. Just
taste it with your eyes closed, please.
"Yuk, what is that?" my daughter asked as another family taste
panel got under way.
"I never saw brown fish," her father said. "Are these fish
parts?" he asked, gingerly indicating some gilled globs.
"Shiitake mushrooms," I said. "You like them."
"I don't," piped the daughter, moving right into, "Why does it
have to be so hot?"
I encouraged her to eat the more bland noodle dish because it
had peanut butter in it.
She thought it looked cold (it was) and demanded to know why the
noodles were so brown (buckwheat). "They're called soba noodles.
They eat them in Japan." (She has ...
