LOS ANGELES Danny Kaye would surely have been the envy of Walter Mitty, the fictional dreamer he portrayed in one of his most memorable film roles, because he rarely repressed an urge to master a new skill.

A star of stage, screen, television and cabarets for more than 40 years, the red-haired Mr. Kaye, who died yesterday, had a face that seemed to be made of rubber, eyes that could light up a theater and a unique style of fast-talking comedy.

A pilot certified to fly jumbo jets, he also conducted many of the world's major symphony orchestras with a comic flair. A gourmet chef, specializing in Chinese cuisine, he also received France's top culinary award.
