Barry Bonds's climb to the 600-home run plateau, which he reached
Friday night, has been a worthwhile exercise if for no other reason
than it brings to mind true greatness. As I have imagined Bonds's
quest, I picture the big man front and center, swinging mightily. But
to the side of the frame, I see the familiar face of a man rooting
him on. That would be his godfather, Willie Mays. Now there was
greatness.
Only Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth and Mays have hit more home runs than
Bonds, and Mays's 660 are the godson's next target. Already Bonds's
relatives and friends are pointing to the psychic pain he will feel
when he hits No. 661. But Bonds need not worry because, really, he
cannot replace Mays ...
