LONG BRANCH, N.J. At city hall in this sleepy seaside community
of 40,000 blacks and whites, Jews and Italians, ethnic jokes are no
longer funny - they are outlawed.
The 250 employees of the city, which consists of 5 square miles
and six beaches just north of Asbury Park, were ordered this week to
adhere to a ban on ethnic-based stories and jokes in hallways,
offices, restrooms and other areas of city buildings.
"Realistically, it's going to be tough to prohibit people from
telling these jokes," said Anthony J. Muscillo, Long Branch's
business administrator. "We can't go around with surveillance teams
listening to employees' conversations."
