Today, St. Patrick's Day, Peter Gunning may be in some danger of
being run ragged, what with the parade and nonstop festivities, or
perhaps finding himself awash in green beer. On most other days,
though, his job as consul-general of Ireland based in Chicago would
not seem particularly hazardous.
So a visitor might be surprised to discover Gunning's unassuming
office in the Wrigley Building sits behind secure steel inner doors.
But security doors simply are part of the diplomatic package of the
'80s, and Gunning - though never personally in danger - has more
reason than most to know the necessity for some of the odd components
of that package.
