Leading TV evangelists are rallying to the aid of disgraced Jim
Bakker in an apparent effort to save not only his religious empire
but to protect their own as well.
Rival evangelists are crossing theological boundaries after a
series of embarrassments that threaten to shake the faith of those
who support their ministries with millions of dollars in
contributions.
With few exceptions, members of the electronic church depend on
a steady flow of donations to keep their TV shows and other programs
afloat. If Bakker's highly successful PTL organization were to fail,
other TV preachers could find their own followers beginning to
reconsider the wisdom of their support.
