Many people develop duodenal ulcers, often called peptic ulcers.
It is a common belief that these ulcers only occur if the stomach
secretes acid. However, most people secrete acid and some of them
develop ulcers while others do not.
Therefore, it appears there is a balance between ulcer-producing
factors, such as acid or pepsin, and factors that protect the lining
of the stomach, such as mucus production.
A common factor disturbing this balance is stress. There is
often truth in the statement to the ulcer sufferer: "It is not what
you are eating, it is what is eating you."
The most characteristic ulcer symptom is a burning, gnawing or
aching pain in the stomach.
