The offer, as Andre the health club manager laid it out, was
this: I put $200 down, then pay $92.50 a month for 24 months. In
return I would receive a "Presidential Elite" membership in the
Chicago Health Clubs.
The benefits would be legion. I would receive special
certificates, embossed like shares of stock, entitling the bearer to
discounts and free trial memberships. These I could sell for
hundreds of dollars or give away to worthy employees.
I would have a special card that would identify my elevated
status and give me priority when reserving racquetball courts. The
membership itself would be an "investment" I could later sell, if I
